How to Get an Internship at a PR Agency

June 13, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Professional Development, Public Relations, Raleigh PR Agencycollege internship, cover letter, Elon, how to get an internship, Meredith College, NCSU, networking, PR internship, public relations internships, resume, UNC

Our intern Erin Kelley not only landed an internship here at Clairemont – she also wants to share a few tips with you on how to do the same! Isn’t she sweet?

This could be your desk, too!

In the public relations field, internships are crucial for networking and eventually landing your dream job. Since I went through the internship process recently, I thought I would share six easy steps that helped me find my place at Clairemont:

  1. Research: Searching through massive amounts of internship postings and websites can be stressful and overwhelming at first. If you’re doing a Google search, try to narrow it down first by location, then by interest. Just from my experience, your best bet is networking. Don’t be afraid to connect to public relations agencies through social media! I actually found out about the Clairemont internship program from then-intern Margot Horgan’s post on the UNC Public Relations Facebook page.
  2. Understand the application process: Unless an agency specifically states otherwise, it is usually a safe bet to include your cover letter in the body of the email, with your resume attached. Employers may also want writing samples from past internships or class assignments, so choose from your best work! I usually include a news release and then something that shows my creative side, like a feature story or design project.
  3. Cover letter: The purpose of the cover letter is to go into depth about important experiences or previous internships that you couldn’t fully explain on your resume. You’ll also want to throw in a sentence or two describing why you would be an asset to the company. Always include a cover letter, even if it isn’t mentioned – it can’t hurt!
  4. Resume: It wasn’t until this past year that I learned that your resume, specifically the relevant experience section, should be tailored to each position. For instance, if I were to apply for a nonprofit internship, I would highlight my work with the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina; however, for an agency position, I would include my experience as PR director for an on-campus organization.
  5. Email: The worst mistake you can make with an email is the dreaded typo or grammar mistake. As I learned in my public relations writing class, you can never rely on spell check! Sometimes it’s best to whip out the good ol’ AP Stylebook. Other than that, just be professional yet personable when explaining your interest in the company and past public relations work.
  6. Follow Up: Arguably the most important part of the process is maintaining communication with the agency. I always make sure to keep a record of when I applied, sent writing samples, talked with them, etc., so that I can stay in touch and provide any information they may need.

These are just a few tricks of the trade that I used this past year when searching for an internship. Overall, the key to securing a PR internship is perseverance and a bit of luck!

Meet Erin: Another “E” Summer Intern at Clairemont

June 12, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Professional Development, Public Relations, Raleigh PR Agencydowntown Raleigh, Erin Kelley, intern, PR internship, Raleigh, Summer Internship, UNC

Say hello to another one of Clairemont’s summer “E” interns, Erin Kelley! She joins us as a rising senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she is a J School student. Already, Erin has shown us what she can do, and without further ado, we’d like to share this interview with you (no, we did not mean for that to rhyme – it just did).

Meet Erin!

So Erin, you’re from Winston-Salem. How long have you lived in North Carolina?

My entire life…so almost 21 years.

That’s a long time.

Yeah, and my family has always stayed in the same house, even. We never moved.

Sheesh. You’re quite the NC lover. Is that why you love UNC so much?

It is!

So, about that. How did you decide to study PR in college, anyway?

I declared public relations as my major the day after I finished up my freshman year. The real answer is that I took Business 100, and it wasn’t what I thought it would be…so I added marketing and communications to the mix to make things more interesting.

And now you’re going into your senior year. What are you looking forward to the most?

A class called Branding of Me with Gary Kayye. I want to integrate all of my social media accounts and have a website where you can find me on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest and on my personal blog. This class should really help me with that.

Do you know Gary Kayye? He’s pretty awesome. I spoke to his class last year.

He presented at one of our PRSSA meetings this past year, and that’s how I heard about his class.

So how involved are you in PRSSA?

I was attended a lot of meetings this past year, and next year, I will be the treasurer, making everyone pay dues! It has been such a great experience because it has helped me with my resume and cover letter, and it’s great for networking. It gets you in with the speakers, and from there, you can build meaningful relationships and get a better understanding of what life will be like after college.

So you realize the importance of networking?

I feel like with today’s economy and the way journalism is evolving, that’s the only way to get into an agency. And, of course, having the UNC connection is always really helpful.

I’d say so. That’s why I was so excited about your resume – I saw the UNC email address!

Thank you! I guess the thing I am really working on right now with networking is keeping in touch with important contacts and making sure I reach out to someone if I have any questions or need advice.

And that’s really important. It can be the difference between forgetting about someone and keeping them at top of mind….So what have you learned so far at Clairemont?

Well, first off, I have learned that I love working in downtown Raleigh! I have also learned the importance of using the correct tone when you’re speaking to different audiences. For instance, when I am helping to write a Drexel Heritage blog post, I am always cognizant that I need to be using the voice of a fashionista. I have also learned a lot about the importance of media lists and thinking about strategy when you’re pitching. Oh, and I’ve been thinking a lot more about the appropriate channels to go to with my stories. I never realized how involved it all is!

Indeed, it is! You’re a quick learner, Erin! Anything else you want people to know about you? Any hobbies?

I signed up for the City of Oaks half marathon in November. It will be my second. I am following in the footsteps of Dana!

Buddy Media vs. Wildfire

June 8, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Marketing, Social Media + Influencer EngagementBuddy Media, differences between, measurement tools, pros and cons, social media tools, tracker, Wildfire

One of the things I love about my job in public relations is the chance to familiarize myself with emerging technologies. It seems like every single day I am reading about the latest and greatest Facebook app or measurement tool. Social enterprise software companies are working hard each and every day to enhance users’ experiences across various social networking platforms.

The tough part in learning about all of the software available is figuring out what are the differences – they can be so similar! Today, I’d like to compare two similar services –  Wildfire and Buddy Media – both of which I have used for client projects:

Wildfire

Functionality: This suite of products includes a messenger tool, where you can schedule posts, respond to posts and generally keep track of page activity in chronological order.  Additionally, it features a page manager tool where you have the ability to create as many applications (or apps) as you’d like  (quizzes, photo albums, coupons, etc. included), as well as a promotions tool where fans can register for a sweepstakes. Page-level and app analytics are also available to you.

Pros:

  • Using the monitor tool, you have the ability to compare the performance of your page with other Facebook pages.
  • Wildfire has a great selection of pre-coded templates for your use. This is especially useful if you don’t have anyone in the office (or no budget) to create a custom app using CSS coding.

Cons:

  • The analytics don’t differ that much from what Facebook offers with its Insights feature.
  • You cannot track old posts. Only posts that are made after you start using the tool will be available. While this might not sound all that problematic for some of you, it’s important to be able to track old posts when you’re dealing with the history of customer service complaints.

Buddy Media

Functionality: Like Wildfire, the Buddy Media suite of products features a conversation tool where users can schedule and respond to posts, as well as see activity in chronological order.  It also features a profile tool similar to that of Wildfire’s page manager tool (sweepstakes included) and a similar analytics feature.

Pros:

  • Buddy will work with you to create a custom template design for your tab(s), reflecting the colors and fonts of your brand.
  • You are able to track old posts! Buddy populates its conversation tool with posts that were made even before you started using the program. This is nice for reasons mentioned above.

Cons:

  • Buddy’s analytics don’t differ that much from Facebook Insights, either.
  • Without CSS coding knowledge, you are more limited in what you can do with your tabs. Buddy has a smaller selection of templates than that of Wildfire.

Of course, everything that I’ve written above could change in a matter of months, weeks even! In fact, I haven’t used Buddy Media’s tool in the last five months. Undoubtedly, the company has responded to customer feedback and has upgraded many of its services. Not to mention, Salesforce.com just entered into an agreement to acquire the company in hopes of delivering the first comprehensive marketing cloud.

Is there anything you’d like to add to the list of pros and cons for Buddy Media and Wildfire? I know that cost certainly is a concern, but because it can vary greatly from client to client and service to service, I thought it’d be good to focus mostly on function here. Feel free to share your feedback on cost, as well!

We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Does Facebook Advertising Really Work?

June 6, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Marketing, Social Media + Influencer Engagementadvice, Facebook ads, Facebook advertising, Facebook marketing, how to create Facebook ads, social media marketing, tips
Are these things really worth it?

I recently had the chance to sit in on a webinar hosted by Justin Kistner of Webtrends and Jason Keath of Social Fresh, where they addressed the age-old (well, not that old) question: Does Facebook advertising really work?

This question has been in the forefront of debate recently with General Motor’s announcement that the company is pulling all of its advertising from the social network. So, we must know, did GM make a good choice? Is Facebook advertising really worth it?

The short answer is yes!  The long answer: certain types of ads work better than others. Here are a few important things I learned that will help you create the most efficient and effective Facebook ads:

  1. Use many highly targeted ads versus one big-reach ad. It’s better to create separate ads that target specific groups (i.e. twenty-something females with an interest in interior design, middle-aged men that enjoy exercising) than it is to create one all-encompassing ad.
  2. Target ads to fans for conversion. Fans are seven times more likely to click on an ad than a non-fan. An added bonus? Cheaper CPC (that’s cost per click).
  3. Link ads to Facebook apps instead of websites. What happens to fans that click on a Facebook ad that leaves Facebook? They go back to Facebook. Ads that don’t redirect traffic to a different website receive twice the conversion rate than ads that do leave the site. In short, keep fans on Facebook engaged by directing them to an app on your page!
  4. Refresh creative regularly. Ideally, you should update your creative within 72 hours after launching the ad. This ensures a higher CTR (click-through rate) and will keep your audience intrigued.

So what do you think? Did you find these tips helpful? We’d love to hear your comments, and please stay tuned – we’ll be sharing a few best practices when it comes to writing copy for your Facebook advertisements.

Green Thought Thursday: How to Recycle Old Magazines

May 31, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, In Our Community, SustainabilityArtspace, crafts, DIY projects, how-to projects, old magazines, outdated magazines, projects, Raleigh, Recycle, recycling, Sustainability, upcycle1 Comment on Green Thought Thursday: How to Recycle Old Magazines

Today’s Green Thought Thursday is shared by Erica Amatori, our fabulous new summer intern who just graduated from Green Hope High School. Needless to say, we’re impressed by her ambition, writing skills and dedication to all things green!

Clairemont intern, Erin Kelley, helps organize a delivery of last year's magazines for Artspace!

Reading magazines may be fascinating the first few times, but the gossip gets old, fast. We are constantly buying more magazines and newspapers to feed our 24-hour news cycle, but, in the end, what do we do with all of these outdated magazines?

At Clairemont, we recently recycled our plethora of last year’s furniture and fashion magazines by donating them to Artspace in downtown Raleigh, where the recycled pages will be used for collages and other kid-friendly art projects.

Taking an easier approach, the city of Raleigh also approves magazines as acceptable recycling items.  So, dropping them off in the recycling bin is just fine, too.  But, if you’re feeling more creative than that, here are some original ways to reuse and recycle:

  • Turn magazine pages into stylish gift wrap
  • Donate them to a local school to use in a book sale
  • Shred the paper and make vibrant fillers or gift basket paper
  • Glue strips onto pieces of tile to create coasters
  • Produce funky jewelry or accessories, such as purses or beads
  • Donate them to a doctors office, nonprofit organization or hospital
  • Make homemade envelopes
  • Create handy and cute fridge magnets
  • And—something more ironic—use them to make your own trash can (or recycling can!)

Have fun this summer by starting a DIY project and turning something useless into something useful. Don’t be afraid to make a statement and convert old news into new projects. Did of any of these ideas strike your fancy? We’d love to hear how you plan to reuse your old magazines!
