Securing a Client as a Regular Columnist: Carrie Knowles + Psychology Today

Exploring the simplicity and psychology of everyday feats can be mesmerizing. Reading another perspective about life in a pandemic, work from home struggles, fashion trends and the wonders of aging is comforting and reassuring to many Psychology Today readers. 

Enter Clairemont client and award-winning author and writer Carrie Knowles. While Clairemont first pitched Carrie as a resource, it was Carrie’s talent and expertise that secured her as a regular columnist for Psychology Today where she explores all these topics and more in her column: “Shifting Forward: A Wanderer’s Musings.” As of today, Carrie has written 47 columns for Psychology Today. 

Carrie is passionate about living as a creative person and sees the world in a way that “creativity should have no boundaries and dreams no fences.” She has published four novels, dozens of short stories and hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles. 

Her most recent novel, A Musical Affair, is about divorce, deception, affairs, expensive secrets, long overdue forgiveness, the power of beautiful music. The Inevitable Past, Carrie writes the unknown story of her long-lost grandmother who died from trauma during the childbirth of Carrie’s father. With few clues, Carrie crafts the story of her grandmother’s life and creates a relationship between grandmother and granddaughter from beyond the grave. The idea of an inevitable past is supported by science as epigenetics can show how trauma from ancestors has the potential to build an additional layer of information onto DNA.

We are thrilled to announce that with our client Ingersoll Rand, Clairemont Communications won a PRSA Silver Anvil for our “Owning the Future: Ingersoll Rand’s Equity Grant” campaign. Our entry received this high recognition in the Events and Observances category, and Clairemont is honored to have partnered with Ingersoll Rand on such a milestone initiative in the company’s history that combined internal communications, external communications and event planning.

Ingersoll Rand committed to make all employees owners in the company and awarded an equity grant of $150 million, one of the largest by an industrial company. To improve employee connection, contribution to financial performance and awareness within the industry, the team united 16,000 global employees during COVID-19 through a virtual bell ringing event with the New York Stock Exchange, meticulously coordinated with 300 simultaneous on-site and remote celebrations.

Since 1944, Silver Anvil Awards have recognized our industry’s outstanding public relations programs and awarded organizations that have successfully addressed challenging issues with exemplary professional skill, creativity and resourcefulness. Internal Communications? How Can That Help Me?

Internal communications means just that – that Clairemont serves as an extension of a company’s internal communications team. We have a track record of quickly getting up to speed on our clients’ projects, spearheading initiatives and helping to move the needle immediately.

For example, Ingersoll Rand, a global industrial manufacturer, turned to Clairemont to oversee several critical internal communications initiatives. When the Ingersoll Rand Industrials segment merged with Gardner Denver, Inc. to form the new Ingersoll Rand (IR), Clairemont helped to design a successful communications program to unite 16,000 employees across 70 countries for a seamless Day 1 integration. We helped craft sustainability reports, launch awards programs and roll out a $150 million equity grant with a bell-ringing event at the New York Stock Exchange — all in lock-step with the Ingersoll Rand communications team.

Media Coverage That Matters

At Clairemont, we understand the importance of securing strategic media coverage for clients. But for one of our clients, the North Carolina Association of Fire Chiefs (NCAFC), sharing its message could be a matter of life and death.

The Need for NC Volunteer Firefighters

Currently, Clairemont is partnering with The Felice Agency and the NCAFC for an intensive two-year campaign to recruit volunteer firefighters across 15 of the most at-risk counties in the state. In North Carolina, nearly 70 percent of all firefighters work on a volunteer basis. The number of volunteers is falling rapidly each year, and these 15 counties are reaching a critically low level of volunteers. 

As a part of the campaign to boost volunteer interest and retention, Clairemont gets to share the stories of some of these brave heroes. The firefighters we work with are always incredible, but one of the volunteer’s stories is especially remarkable. 

Seventeen-year-old Jade Gatling of Gaston, North Carolina was the first Black female cadet to graduate from the junior firefighter program at the Gaston Volunteer Fire Department. Jade has spent her last year of school scaling ladders, braving car fires and saving lives, all while taking a full high school course load.

Coverage That Matters

Through a targeted, individualized pitch strategy, Clairemont secured wide-spread coverage of Jade’s story in several key news outlets.

Clairemont’s work with the NCAFC and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) has earned both an Award of Excellence and Best in Category from the North Carolina Chapter of Public Relations Society of America.

Client Wendell Falls Unveils Hero Home

We’re excited and honored when we have the opportunity to partner with incredible clients who give back to our community. And this is just such an occasion.

On Veterans Day 2020, client Wendell Falls gathered with its partners to honor a legacy – the legacy of SFC Elis A. Barreto who dedicated his life to his country, who served with courage and who made the ultimate sacrifice for his nation.

Wendell Falls, along with Garman Homes, the HBA of Raleigh-Wake County, the U.S. Veterans Corps and Operation: Coming Home, hosted a patriotic key ceremony to unveil a “Hero Home” to the family of SFC Barreto, who died in combat in September 2019. The first in Wendell, this Hero Home was given to Legna, SFC Barreto’s wife, and her children as a gift to honor his service. Fresh Paint by Garman, one of Wendell Falls’ award-winning builders, constructed the house on a homesite donated by Newland.

Called a Hero Home Finale, the key ceremony celebrated the life and accomplishments of SFC Barreto. The event featured patriotic songs from the Bombshells along with heart-felt comments from government officials, Garman, Newland, the HBA … and finally Legna herself.

Partners unveiled exciting gifts for Legna and her family, such as technology from Lenovo, a golf cart from Garman (for the Wendell Falls culture!), a refurbished car and even a special military-themed room for Legna’s two boys.
