Dairy Queen – for many people those two words are synonymous with summertime and happy memories. No one understands that better than Andrew Valkanoff, owner and operator of Triangle Dairy Queen, who loves serving treats and takes pride in the quality of service his employees deliver. He’s been a Clairemont client since the beginning of the year, but you only have to spend a few minutes with him to realize how passionate he is about his business and the communities he serves.

This year marks the 75th “Fanniversary” of Dairy Queen, so we spent some time with Andrew talking about how Triangle Dairy Queen is celebrating this major milestone.

Friday Five: 36 Hours in Raleigh

As you may recall, last March the NY Times ran an outstanding piece highlighting our beloved City of Oaks titled, 36 Hours in Raleigh. N.C. The article featured some the local restaurants, shops and museums that have helped put Raleigh on the map in recent years.

I’ve lived in Raleigh for almost twenty years now (wow time flies), so needless to say I have seen how much our great city has changed for the better. The growth has been steady, strong and smart. I have always lived and worked close to downtown, so keeping up with what new restaurants and businesses are opening and thriving has become a personal passion for me.

A few weeks ago, my college roommate came to visit for the weekend. When she left Raleigh in 2001, there were only a handful of good restaurant options and downtown certainly was not the destination it is today. My husband graciously offered to take the kids out of town for the weekend, so I had the chance to serve as tour guide and show my dear friend how things have changed in a “36 Hours in Raleigh” of our own. So, for today’s Friday Five, here are a few of the spots we visited along the way.

Friday Night – 8:00 p.m.

For dinner on Friday night I chose one of my favorite spots downtown, Poole’s Diner. Time after time Poole’s does not disappoint. My husband and dine here often and always prefer sitting at the bar, which helps trying to get a seat on a busy weekend night. The vibe, cocktails and menu are consistently good. We choose a few menu items to share and it was perfection.

We also had the most wonderful chocolate dessert at Poole’s made with Videri chocolate from the local chocolate factory in the Raleigh Depot. Videri is BYOB and has a great patio, so it’s a perfect spot to enjoy one last glass of wine and some delicious chocolate before heading home. They also offer factory tours and serve up Stumptown coffee if you are in the neighborhood have a chance to stop by in the morning. The owners, Sam and Starr Ratto, have really created something special.

Saturday Afternoon – 2:00 p.m.

We spent the afternoon on Saturday shopping, and since we both have young children, we had to stop in one of my favorite children’s boutiques in Five Points, Progeny Shoppe. Store owner, Lauren Hood, has created a curated collection of modern, hip clothing, accessories and toys for little ones. The store is delightful and it’s almost impossible to walk out empty handed!

Saturday Night – 6:30 pm

 For dinner Saturday night I decided on another favorite of mine, Bida Manda. We started with a moscow mule and shared the lettuce wrap appetizer. The service is always fantastic, and the décor creates a warm atmosphere that draws you in off the street. A creature of habit, I always get the Pad Tai and am never disappointed.

Sunday Morning – 8:00 a.m.

I couldn’t think of a better way to end our weekend than with breakfast at Joule. Joule has quickly become my hands down favorite spot for leisurely weekend brunch, or for a quick breakfast during the week. I love the coffee, the hipster vibe, the vibrant décor and the community table. Obsessed with the grits and sourdough toast with avocado…what a great addition to downtown!

These are only a few of the spots we visited during our weekend tour – there were so many more we didn’t have time for. I was proud to see what Raleigh has become through her eyes. What also became clear along the way is that Raleigh has achieved the best of both world’s…home to an amazingly talented group of chefs, small business owners and entrepreneurs, Raleigh has maintained a local, organic, laid back feel. Nothing fancy, just good people, good times and really good food.

Airbnb and Raleigh’s Shared Economy

There’s something funny about this to me. I met Jeff Tippett about seven years ago when I orchestrated a ticket giveaway on Twitter for a client. I think “community” was just becoming a social media buzzword at the time. While I’ve come to loathe its over usage, there’s not a more befitting term for how two communications professionals living in the same city met.

The tickets were for a non-profit performing arts group that many would consider a big part of our local community. I remember that night being hectic, as I went from the office to home to deliver the tickets just before the performance began. My son joined me for the ticket delivery, and we quickly met Jeff and his daughter who was about the same age as my son, before they rushed in to claim their seats.

Over the next few years, I bumped into Jeff a few times. We didn’t see each other often, but I felt like I knew him because I continued to follow him on Twitter. He was part of what I consider my first online (yes, I have to use it) community within my local community. It didn’t seem like there were that many people from Raleigh on Twitter at the time. In addition to Jeff, the early adopters as I remember it were Phil Buckley, Ginny Hamilton, Wayne Sutton and Evan Carroll.

Two or three years after the rushed ticket exchange, I had the pleasure of presenting with Jeff during a session designed to teach non-profits how to engage online communities. We met for prep, conducted the presentation and probably said we should get back together for coffee soon. Then we returned to our hectic lives as communications people.

Now, as a new kind of community has emerged, I’ve had the opportunity to reconnect with Jeff. When I learned that he was organizing a town hall style meeting to facilitate discussion about the City of Raleigh’s concerns with Airbnb, I knew it was time for me to speak out about a community that I’ve proudly become part of as an Airbnb host.

Enter new buzzwords: the sharing economy. While this term will likely become over used too, for now, it is the perfect description of how I feel about my experience with Airbnb. The extra revenue stream that comes from being a host is secondary to the pride I feel as a brand ambassador to Raleigh. In fact, because our Airbnb guest suite is in the same house that is the home of Clairemont, we’ve created a team of Raleigh brand ambassadors.

We love sharing our office house and our beautiful, vibrant, fun city with our guests. There’s nothing better than telling them to visit ArtSpace, providing a list of our favorite Raleigh downtown restaurants and suggesting that they shop like locals by going by Stitch, Nora and Nicky’s, High Cotton and Deco. And that’s exactly why I asked Jeff if I could join the panel he organized on why Airbnb is good for Raleigh, despite the fact that our zoning will likely allow us to continue to host one way or the other.

Now, I have to use the word community again. In my twelve years in Raleigh, I’ve never felt a sense of local community like I did at the town hall meeting Jeff organized. There was so much energy and passion in the room. While most attendees were in favor of the City of Raleigh allowing residents to be Airbnb hosts, one thing was certain. Everyone wanted what’s best for our city. The pride was overwhelming and is what I believe makes Raleigh such as special place to live. It is no surprise Raleigh made Airbnb’s Hospitality Index.

As a shout-out to fellow expert communicator Jeff — excellent work in organizing live and online discussion around this topic that is important to our city as we continue to be recognized as a city of innovation and creative thinkers! While our officials continue to consider the future of Airbnb in the City of Oaks, you have facilitated healthy and productive dialogue in a way that few people are successful in facilitating. I’m happy to be part of your “community,” in every aspect of the word.

Last year, I had the amazing opportunity to join the cast of Listen to Your Mother: Raleigh Durham and share a story that is near and dear to my heart about my grandmother.

I’ll admit, I was nervous. Yes, I’m a PR person. Because of this, you might be inclined to say that I am a professional storyteller. However, I’m not accustomed to standing on a stage and reading a personal story. I’m also not accustomed to doing so with a group of women who are really fabulous writers and storytellers — women who started as strangers but are now friends. Sharing this experience with them created strong bonds that will never be broken, and I treasure the times we now have as a part of an ongoing writers’ group. (Writers’ group, group therapy…whatever.)

Almost everyone has a story to tell about motherhood. Listen to Your Mother 2015 will feature funny, touching, enlightening and inspiring stories about motherhood in 39 cities. This year’s Raleigh-Durham submission deadline is January, 31. If your heart is tugging at you to submit a story, I strongly encourage you to do so. Submissions are open to women and men, and you don’t have to be a mother to tell your story. After grand opening, many companies make an effort to get to know their new neighbors–perhaps with an open house, a product promotion or even a donation to a local charity.

But what if your business that hasn’t sold a single product? Or signed a single contract? Or even opened your front doors?

Wendell Falls Steps Out Before Even Starting Up

Wendell Falls, the upcoming master-planned community nestled among the quaint rooftops of Wendell, N.C., exceeded the standard protocol for cursory introductions. Inspired by its mission to forge lasting relationships and strengthen the foundations of its community, Wendell Falls offered a helping hand to its new neighbors long before it even broke ground on its first house.

At first, Wendell Falls started by providing monetary contributions to assist the community where it needed it most immediately. With a focus on bolstering economic and academic growth, the new development team locked arms with local business owners and civic leaders to identify opportunities for growth in the chamber and schools.

And while these ongoing partnerships boldly demonstrate Newland’s caring spirit, we think there’s something else that makes this client “rock”.

A Client That Truly “Rocks”

Newland Communities, the developer of Wendell Falls, is fueled by its vision to “create enduring, healthier communities for people to live life in ways that matter most to them.” Newland has woven this principle of sustainability into 140 commercial, residential and mixed-use communities in 14 states nationwide; Wendell Falls carried on the legacy with a big bulldozer…and some creative thinking.

As the team commenced grading on the new Wendell Falls site, they encountered challenges excavating and disposing of the rocky terrain. And we’re not talking about a few pebbles; these hefty boulders posed an expensive challenge to export and stow offsite. And then Newland’s team encountered a “light bulb” idea: why not donate the boulders to the local Wendell Parks and Recreational department to aid its renovation efforts?

A dump truck (and a crane and a few hard hats) later, Wendell Falls donated eight hefty boulders to the Wendell Parks and Rec, footing the entire bill for the excavation, exporting and unloading while saving the town thousands of dollars in landscaping fees.

This creative form of “recycling” showcased the team’s heart to support and care for their community in every way possible—including a little “rock and roll.”
