Listen to Your Mother Wisdom

Listen to Your Mother Wisdom

May 2, 2014January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Free Advice, In Our CommunityListen to Your Mother, LTYM, Mothers Day

If you agree with the expression “mother knows best,” you’ll want to go to the Raleigh-Durham Listen to Your Mother show on May 6 or 8. It is being held at 7:30 p.m. in Kenan Auditorium at William Peace University, and the proceeds benefit SafeChild. With 14 incredibly personal stories about motherhood, I guarantee that you’ll be inspired, entertained and so moved that you’ll find yourself thinking about the stories for days or even weeks to come.

For me, it was months. I sat in the audience last year as Listen to Your Mother made its Raleigh-Durham debut. I laughed. I cried. And eight months later, I found myself still thinking about the show. I Googled to find the deadline for submitting an essay — THAT DAY! I sat down at my desk and banged out a story. I hadn’t known for eight months that it was the one I wanted to tell, but when type filled the page, I hit send.

I am honored to have made it through the audition and to be part of a cast that consists of amazingly strong women. Walking into a room of strangers to share a personal story for our first read-through was down right intimidating. Then, something magical happened. One by one, standing in Liisa Ogburn‘s living room, each woman let down her guard and put it all out there. Instant admiration! Instant trust! Instant bonding!

While we’ve only been together a few times and haven’t even done our performance yet, I’ve learned so much from this group and experience. I think many of these lessons apply not only to life in general, but also to professional development, so I’m sharing them here.

  1. Get out of your comfort zone. Do something that scares you. Take a risk. You’ll be glad that you did.
  2. Enjoy the journey. Or don’t. This is actually a quote from Lisa Bull’s story. Accentuate the positive!
  3. Listen to your mother. And anyone else willing to tell you her story. I love what Katy Schafer said when we were being interviewed by the N&O about how our social media society really only allows for snippets. To sit down and hear an entire story and really have the opportunity to listen to it in these hectic times is a real gift.
  4. We’re all okay. Who doesn’t have insecurities? Whether it as at home or work, nobody is perfect. The good news is, we don’t have to be alone with whatever might be bothering us. Reach out and ask for help. Take a deep breathe. Phone a friend. Call your mom! Or take advice from Stephanie Lormand and turn your challenges into strengths.
  5. Tell the truth and say what you mean. Let’s face it, telling the truth is hard. You think owning up to a mistake in the office is difficult? Try telling your young daughters where your breasts went, just as Alicia Altmueller had to do after having a mastectomy.
  6. An old dog can learn new tricks. I heard a 30-someting CEO call social media crap this week and say that he’d never been on Facebook. If we don’t embrace new technologies as professionals, we’ll be left behind. And miss out on some fun! If Rebecca Lanning‘s mom can become a techie, so can you.
  7. To get what you want, you might have to get up at 4:50 a.m. Yes, that’s early. A friend once posted on Facebook, “What are you willing to do to succeed?” My favorite response was, “The better question is what am I not willing to do!” If you need motivation to reach your goals, you need to hear Betsy Martin’s story.
  8. There are many things we can’t control. Gosh, this is hard to accept.
  9. Beware of a snake in the grass…or under the sofa as Agnes Stevens will tell you. What do you do when life throws you a surprise? You deal with it. You have a problem, you figure it out or at least grab a fire poker and give it a good jab.
  10. Life is short, so don’t take it for granted. What would you do with your kids today if you were terminally ill? How will you spend your last moments with your mother? When will you get around to showing more appreciation, complaining less and enjoying each moment more. How about now?

Please come see the show to hear more about these and other beautiful stories. I might not be your mother, but this mama says to buy your tickets and go! In the meantime, what’s the best advice your mother ever gave you? Please leave your answer in the comments section.

Keep Calm and Communicate

Keep Calm and Communicate

February 17, 2014January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, In Our Community, Public RelationsCarolina Theatre, downtown Raleigh, Marriott, PDQ, snowstorm, Triangle Business Journal2 Comments on Keep Calm and Communicate

As I sat around the conference table with fellow Raleigh public relations professionals for our NCPRSA board meeting on Wednesday, the snow began falling and whirling and swirling outside the windows. Thirty minutes earlier, I had boldly proclaimed to my team that I just didn’t believe “it” was going to happen. (But I packed a bag just in case that morning.)

Getting a room of PR people to abruptly end a discussion is no easy task, but one that was done when we were told under no uncertain terms that the building was closing. Our cars were covered and the lanes of the streets were no longer distinguishable by the time we got to the parking lot. That didn’t stop us from doing what everyone else did at that exact time — attempt to make a break for it! Yes, we all knew what happened in Atlanta earlier in the month, but that didn’t stop us from rushing to the safety of our own homes, needing to pick up our children or succumbing to the panic of a milk and bread shortage.

I had to make a game-time decision between joining my family at home or returning to The Clairemont House, knowing that my choice would determine where I would likely be “stuck” for the following days. With a scheduled dinner with out-of-town clients staying near the office, I decided to head downtown. Hey, one of them is Canadian, and I knew she’d never let me live it down if I cancelled over a couple of snowflakes! So, after it took 2.5 hours to drive 10 miles, I put my car in park (at the office for the next three days) and myself in observation mode. I knew it was about to get interesting.

The snow continued, businesses closed and fiery traffic accidents became the topic of national news. Most of the restaurants had closed, and we altered our dinner plans. I marveled at the most quiet downtown Raleigh scene on my walk to the Marriott to join our clients. With few choices, we decided to dine there. Enter smart communications observation #1.

The lobby, bar and restaurant of the Marriott became a makeshift home of winter storm hostages. Our clients included people from around the country, as well as a local who couldn’t make it home. Our fellow refugees shared similar stories. Some had cancelled flights. Some didn’t get out of their downtown offices soon enough. While many embraced the spontaneity like schoolkids on a snow day, for others, tensions ran high. For Raleigh Marriott City Center, it now had to figure out how to service a sudden surge in guest numbers with a short staff. Screen Shot 2014-02-16 at 3.04.18 PM

The hotel rose to the challenge. As soon as we nabbed an open table in the bar area, the server let us know that if we planned to order food, they were working on a limited menu due to being understaffed, and she listed the four or five items available. She was friendly and direct. She let us know right away before we looked at the regular menu and got our hearts set on something we couldn’t have. The beauty of this simple and clear verbal communication was reinforced by the customer service actions all around us. The suited manager was busing tables. The always-smiling bartender had been there since the morning shift. I never saw a Marriott staff member look frustrated, nor did I hear anyone complain.

Across the Triangle the next night, Carolina Theatre decided the show must go on despite the fact that the weather kept many ticket-holders glued to the local news instead of enjoying a live performance by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. After much criticism for this decision involving the upholding of its refunds policy, enter smart communications observation #2. Theatre management issued a statement on its blog called, A Letter to Angry Fans Concerning the Weather.

Having worked at a performing arts center early in my career, I understand that you simply can’t reschedule a stop on national tour. I’ve also found that people who work in arts organizations typically do it as a labor of love for the arts and the community. The letter reminds readers that the target of angry and threatening comments, which can be expressed through impersonal, online channels, are people. People who are most likely hardworking, community-supporting neighbors. Extra kudos to Carolina Theatre for continuing to evaluate the feedback (despite the harshness) and respond by offering tickets to an upcoming show.

The snow began to melt on Friday morning. Having been away from home since Wednesday morning, I was busy trying to wrap up work for the week when smart communications observation #3 was delivered to my inbox. A letter from Triangle Business Journal’s publisher, Bryan Hamilton, let me know that this week’s print edition was coming, albeit a little late. In addition to really admiring the tone of the note below, I think it conveys that the TBJ staff really tried to make it happen. And when they knew it was time to accept defeat, they shifted gears to anticipating their customers’ questions of when will I get it and what can I do in the meantime? Providing instructions on how to get the content online was absolutely brilliant, and I received this email before I would have typically received the print edition on my doorstep, leaving no time to even ask the question, “Where is my TBJ?”

Bravo, Marriott! Bravo, Carolina Theatre! Bravo, Triangle Business Journal! Also, my hat is off to the NC State students who helped stranded motorists, our local news crews who worked around the clock to provide updates, our fire/police/emergency responders, Clairemont client PDQ for delivering free food to those stranded and those helping others, and the Thursday lunch staff at The Raleigh Times (who might have also been the dinner staff and the late night staff) for embracing the “we can’t go anywhere, we might as well drink beer” mentality of its wall-to-wall patrons who had very few choices of open places in downtown Raleigh.

If you’re a foodie living in the Raleigh-Durham metro area, you’re excited for what this week has in store. Triangle Restaurant Week is back and area restaurants are serving up delicious menus – many of which feature some of 2014’s hottest food trends.

Labeled, “a celebration of culinary excellence,” Triangle Restaurant Week is a weeklong event with participating restaurants offering special three-course and five course-course lunch and dinner menu options and wallet-friendly fixed pricing.

With more than 70 top restaurants from Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Chapel Hill and the surrounding areas partaking in this twice-yearly epicurean event, it’s no surprise that they are featuring delectable fare as well as offerings that have been dubbed some of the hottest menu trends for 2014.

Each year, the National Restaurant Association surveys chefs from across the country on which foods, cuisines, beverages and culinary themes will be the upcoming year’s biggest menu trends. The 2014 What’s Hot culinary forecast surveyed nearly 1,300 professional chefs from the American Culinary Federation, asking participants to label more than 250 items as a “hot trend,” “yesterday’s news” or “perennial favorite.”

What the National Restaurant Association found is that, “the top restaurant menu trends for 2014 focus on local sourcing, environmental sustainability and nutrition.” Locally sourced meats and seafood, locally grown produce and environmental sustainability are the highest-ranking trends, and can be found in a number of Triangle Restaurant Week menus.

Raleigh’s 18 Seaboard focuses of North Carolina ingredients, and nearly all of its Triangle Restaurant Week menu offerings include locally sourced products. At Local 22 Kitchen and Bar in Durham, everything served is sourced within 30 miles of its location. Other on-trend Triangle Restaurant Week participants include, Battistellas, Mia Francesca Trattori, Piedmont Restaurant, Lucky 32, Little Hen and more.

Artspace 12th Annual Collectors Gala

Artspace 12th Annual Collectors Gala

November 22, 2013January 31, 2023 Margot HorganBlog, In Our CommunityArtspace, Artspace Collectors Gala, Artspace Gala, downtown Raleigh, Raleigh Art, Raleigh Artists

Working in downtown Raleigh has some pretty amazing perks (too many to count, in fact), but my personal favorite is the eclectic collection of creative shops, restaurants, businesses and artists in our 110-block city center. They are part of a thriving community that has helped Raleigh become the fastest growing major city in the great state of North Carolina.

One of these local spots is Artspace. Just a stone throw away from The Clairemont House, Artspace is a vibrant studio environment of established and emerging artists in addition to a center for education and nationally acclaimed exhibitions. In sum, it’s Raleigh’s hub for visual arts, creation and interaction.

Earlier this month, Artspace held a Media Preview Event for its 12th Annual Collectors Gala, which will benefit the nonprofit’s artists and exhibitions, educational programming and community outreach. Those in attendance at the preview event got a first glimpse of the artwork, which will be featured in the gala’s live auction and were even invited to create an art piece of their own.

Saturday, November 23 from 6 to 11 p.m. is your chance to see this beautiful artwork yourself. Come out for an evening of art, friends, music and food at Artspace’s 12th Annual Collectors Gala.

Keeping with tradition, the Collectors Gala will spotlight the art with a chance to bid on local artwork in live and silent auctions, as well as to purchase artwork displayed throughout the building.

While mingling with fellow guests and browsing the galleries, the event’s epicurean attendees can enjoy savory delicacies prepared local chefs. The evening will feature passed hors d’oeuvres and chef stations serving small plates and desserts created by the incredibly delicious Ladyfingers Catering.

Last year, the Collectors Gala gathered a crowd of more than 450 business leaders and art enthusiasts, raising $114,000 for Artspace artists, projects education and community outreach. With the amount of incredible art, culture and education Artspace provides to the Raleigh community, it is not difficult to see why so many show their support at the organization’s annual gala.

Next World Media Symposium

Next World Media Symposium

October 24, 2013January 31, 2023 Margot HorganBlog, Entry-Level PR Job, In Our Community#NextWorldUNC, Next World, Next World Media Symposium, Technology Trends, UNC

Undoubtedly you’ve heard the oft-repeated claim that technology is changing how we do things. And while some lament and others celebrate this fact, it’s becoming an inescapable truth within the communication industry.

UNC-CH School of Journalism and Mass Communication professors John Sweeney, Gary Kayye and JoAnn Sciarrino are amongst those celebrating. On Friday, Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the three are hosting the Next World Media Symposium in UNC’s Carroll Hall room 33.

The event – inspired by TED Talks – will showcase prominent industry and academic leaders with provocative views of media and branding. Keynote speaker Daryl Evans, vice president of advertising and marcom at AT&T (did you know that at $1.59 billion, AT&T has one of the largest media-spending budgets of any brand?) and others will highlight new trends, new tools and new ways to compete in changing industries of advertising, public relations, marketing and branding.

Within hours of registration opening on Oct. 4, all spots to attend the free event were filled. However, you can still stay in the loop by following the hashtag #NextWorldUNC in addition to joining the waitlist. Plus, make sure to stay tuned for a blog posts by Clairemont interns, Sam Halle and Kate Fedder, who will be attending the event and keeping us all posted on the latest and greatest tech trends!
