Meet Yasmine, Clairemont Intern

Meet Yasmine, Clairemont Intern

May 22, 2018January 31, 2023 Clairemont InternBlog, Professional Development, The Clairemont Teamclairemont intern, NCSU, Public Relations, the clairemont team

When I was a child, I was an avid reader. The first book I ever read on my own was a selection from my extensive Winnie the Pooh collection. After that, I picked up a love of books and haven’t let it go since. Maybe that’s why PR was such an obvious fit; I love people’s stories.

Meet Yasmine

I was named after my great-grandmother whom I was never able to meet. My name is Yasmine Evans, and I’m what you might call a pioneer for my family. I’m the first in my immediate family to go to college. There’s a lot riding on my academic success, but thankfully, I have that love of books to keep me going. I’m a rising senior at NC State University (go Pack!) and major in communications with a concentration in public relations. I also minor in Japanese language, which tells you that I have an eclectic range of interests. I really love skincare and marry that passion with my love of Japanese and Korean culture. My shelves at home are full of products from overseas.

Where It All Started

Because of my love for people’s lives and the stories that are connected to them, I considered journalism while I was in high school. Once entering college, I discovered public relations and wanted to know more. A professor once told me that PR is storytelling. You tell the world your clients’ stories. As someone in public relations, you garner the right attention, you inform and you bring new ideas to the table every day. I knew that was what I wanted to do.

Clairemont

I was excited when I heard from the team that they wanted me to intern for them this summer. I knew that I would learn so much from these talented professionals and would have fun doing it. The Clairemont House, home to Clairemont Communications,  is an inspiring story in itself—a well-designed space with old charm and modern flair. The small team enables me to participate and learn from many different projects and assignments. We’re truly a team here! I hope to bring my passion for writing and people to Clairemont, and I hope to become our clients’ master storyteller.

What I Learned from Interning at a Raleigh PR Agency

August 22, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Marketing, Professional Development, Public Relations, Raleigh PR Agency, The Clairemont Teamadvice, college, high school, how to get an internship, internship, Marketing, NC, NCSU, PR, Public Relations, Raleigh, Triangle, UNC, what I learned at my internship2 Comments on What I Learned from Interning at a Raleigh PR Agency

Today was our ambitious high school (yes, you did read that correctly) graduate’s last day as a Clairemont intern. Before she leaves us, though, she wanted to share a few things that she learned during her internship here. Without further ado, Miss Erica Amatori…

Be sure to wish Erica luck as she leaves for the College of William & Mary on a track/cross country scholarship!

I was frantic the first morning of my summer internship at Clairemont Communications. What should I wear? It was going to be an important day! I was nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. I knew it would be way different than my strategic marketing class I took in high school, that’s for sure. But after the first day of getting to know Josie and Margot, I immediately felt like part of the Clairemont team.

Learning marketing in a class is one thing, but applying it to real life situations is another. During my internship, I was able to experience first-hand what it’s like to work at a public relations agency and make real contributions to clients (and my portfolio!).

Here are some key points I learned that I’d like to share with you:

  • Know your client well. In order to satisfy what they expect to be accomplished, one has to put a lot of research into getting to know the company and gain knowledge on their customers.
  • Before reaching out to the media, prepare. When I was asked to create a media list for a project, I quickly realized how important research would be in finding the right contacts at each outlet – all of this before we ever even made one phone call!
  • Even the smallest of tasks can make the biggest difference. When you’re working in PR it’s important to have the bigger picture, but it’s all the little things that get you there. Taking things step by step is sometimes the best way to tackle big tasks.
  • Be the sponge. Absorb all the information you can and put it to good use. In the future, all of the information I learned about PR and social media will help me become a more skilled employee.
  • Ask questions – it’s how you learn! Don’t ever be afraid to ask questions. An internship is a learning-based environment!
  • Network! In what is actually a small world, connections are everything. Networking provides mentors and working relationships. Did I mention that my high school teacher is good friends with Josie, and that’s how I heard about Clairemont?

My advice to other hopefuls who are striving for an internship: only set one goal – to succeed! Be prepared to learn and open your mind to new experiences that can advance your knowledge. Even though today is my last day, I was still wondering what I should wear and was just as nervous this morning…but it was a different kind of nervous. The kind where you knew you had to say your goodbyes, but you don’t want to leave!

How to Get an Internship at a PR Agency

June 13, 2012January 31, 2023 Josephine ButlerBlog, Professional Development, Public Relations, Raleigh PR Agencycollege internship, cover letter, Elon, how to get an internship, Meredith College, NCSU, networking, PR internship, public relations internships, resume, UNC

Our intern Erin Kelley not only landed an internship here at Clairemont – she also wants to share a few tips with you on how to do the same! Isn’t she sweet?

This could be your desk, too!

In the public relations field, internships are crucial for networking and eventually landing your dream job. Since I went through the internship process recently, I thought I would share six easy steps that helped me find my place at Clairemont:

  1. Research: Searching through massive amounts of internship postings and websites can be stressful and overwhelming at first. If you’re doing a Google search, try to narrow it down first by location, then by interest. Just from my experience, your best bet is networking. Don’t be afraid to connect to public relations agencies through social media! I actually found out about the Clairemont internship program from then-intern Margot Horgan’s post on the UNC Public Relations Facebook page.
  2. Understand the application process: Unless an agency specifically states otherwise, it is usually a safe bet to include your cover letter in the body of the email, with your resume attached. Employers may also want writing samples from past internships or class assignments, so choose from your best work! I usually include a news release and then something that shows my creative side, like a feature story or design project.
  3. Cover letter: The purpose of the cover letter is to go into depth about important experiences or previous internships that you couldn’t fully explain on your resume. You’ll also want to throw in a sentence or two describing why you would be an asset to the company. Always include a cover letter, even if it isn’t mentioned – it can’t hurt!
  4. Resume: It wasn’t until this past year that I learned that your resume, specifically the relevant experience section, should be tailored to each position. For instance, if I were to apply for a nonprofit internship, I would highlight my work with the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina; however, for an agency position, I would include my experience as PR director for an on-campus organization.
  5. Email: The worst mistake you can make with an email is the dreaded typo or grammar mistake. As I learned in my public relations writing class, you can never rely on spell check! Sometimes it’s best to whip out the good ol’ AP Stylebook. Other than that, just be professional yet personable when explaining your interest in the company and past public relations work.
  6. Follow Up: Arguably the most important part of the process is maintaining communication with the agency. I always make sure to keep a record of when I applied, sent writing samples, talked with them, etc., so that I can stay in touch and provide any information they may need.

These are just a few tricks of the trade that I used this past year when searching for an internship. Overall, the key to securing a PR internship is perseverance and a bit of luck!

Whaddaya Think, Nancy Webster?

December 7, 2011January 31, 2023 Dana PhelpsBlog, Fashionfashion, Fashion Week, Nancy Webster, NCSU1 Comment on Whaddaya Think, Nancy Webster?

Whaddaya Think Wednesday is a regular Q&A feature on the Clairemont blog. We ask people “whaddaya think?” on a variety of topics. This week, we share thoughts from fashion industry leader, Nancy Webster.

Q: Nancy, I know that you really have two roles right now – leading your own company and working with North Carolina State University. Can you tell us a bit about each?

I joined NCSU College of Textiles as practicum professor this fall to co-teach the new Fashion and Textile Design program (FTD 104) which is a studio class that focuses upon the fundamentals of design including color, pattern and form.  We have 30 students in our inaugural class who will obtain a BS in Fashion and Textile Design upon graduation.  Here I am able to teach, guide and mentor the students with industry experience which incorporates the real world application of design and how the design discipline is incorporated into business decisions as well as business success.  In our global society, we all know that creativity and innovation are the differentiators of successful companies.  It’s all about who is quick to ideate and then market their creations.

The clients and projects of my consulting company, Nancy Webster LLC, allow me to remain active in the retail and manufacturing environments in design leadership.  I work closely with retailers such as Macy’s and Pier 1 recommending color palettes and design direction for their indoor and outdoor home collections.  International travel to trade shows such as Heimtextil and Maison et Objet provides a plethora of ideas and inspiration allowing a constant flow of new approaches to these product categories.  Much time is spent in consumer research, analyzing and understanding the present business climate of each retailer in order to customize their assortments to deliver profitability goals and margins.  Thus, my role integrates design, merchandising, marketing, global supply chain and management – an all-encompassing perspective which results from 33+ years of corporate experience and exposure.

Continual involvement with industry and retail allows my contribution to academia to be current and relevant based upon industry and retail needs.  My goal is to mentor and prepare design students for the demands and expectations of their potential employers.  They should be prepared to contribute immediately upon securing their first career position.

Q: As an NCSU College of Textiles alum and former executive with widely popular and recognizable brands (including Target and Thomasville), what’s it like to return campus and work with the next generation of leaders in the fashion industry?

Exhilarating!  I love working with the students and observing their progress as creators.  Some are great at color, others have an innate ability for two dimensional design while others quickly master the art of three dimensional form.  In each case, my challenge is to meet the student on their level, evaluate their strengths as well as their opportunities and then with positive support, guide their maturation in the creative discipline through exposure and experiential activities.

In the corporate world, creativity reigns supreme.  Throughout my career, I have contributed to the development of many products and brands…now, I have the opportunity to assist with the development of creative talent which will likewise impact many products and many brands!

Q: You are leading the charge to bring a world-class fashion event to Raleigh in April. What is that about and why is NCSU an appropriate host for the event?

Fashion Week 2012, scheduled for April 11 – 13, promises to exalt creativity and innovation with a global perspective unlike anything NCSU has ever sponsored.  The three day show will educate and showcase professional and student innovation through fashion shows with global participation from Donghua University, Hong Kong Polytecnic University, London College of Fashion and the Fashion Institute of Technology, educational forums focused upon innovation and creativity, exhibitions featuring students design work in wovens, knits, prints and non-wovens and a marketplace of artistic professional talent.  This week is not to be missed as many high profile professionals will be in attendance – company presidents, well-renowned fashion and home designers, international academic leaders and government officials.

NCSU is the perfect host for this Fashion Week event with Raleigh recognized for innovation and creativity leadership as well as our proximity to the Research Triangle Park.  The College of Textiles is also the perfect College to champion this endeavor due to their strong leadership role in blending the art and science disciplines and our close industry ties in the areas of fashion and textile expertise.
