The Beauty of Raleigh PR: Day 9 – Research

The Beauty of Raleigh PR: Day 9 – Research

Massage therapy isn’t only for pampering anymore. Health care providers are recommending massages for patients to feel better anytime. Although general relaxation still tops the list; stress relief, sports performance and the treatment of chronic issues don’t fall too far behind.

The new trend of relieving stress in the workplace has become essential for many corporate events. While brainstorming events for a client, the idea of five-minute massages were mentioned.  After a brief conversation and some contemplation, we decided that having a therapist massage would create a positive buzz for our client.

Planning and organizing events aren’t as easy as they might seem. My task today was to find corporate massage chair vendors. Not all spas offer on-site massages, and not all companies have reasonable rates.

With my favorite spas in mind, I created my list and began calling each one to find out more information. Although this may seem a little tedious, making sure our clients are happy is Clairemont’s number one priority.

My goal was to find the spa that offers the best price. Since all of the spas in the area claim to have the best massage therapists this shouldn’t take too long, right? Just like before, wrong.

I guess every massage school in the world was too busy to take my call, but I wasn’t discouraged. Instead, I took the time to leave each one a pleasant voice mail and send a follow-up email.

Hopefully sometime in the near future I can narrow down my list and recommend the best option to the rest of the team.

The Beauty of Raleigh PR: Day 6 – Grand Openings

What makes a song bluegrass? Searching the web could possibly lead you to a million different definitions. Simply put bluegrass is a style of acoustic music that originated in the 1940’s. Bluegrass has often been referred to as “America’s music”.

There are many distinctions of bluegrass from the typical country sound. Bluegrass usually has a lonesome musical sound with instrumentation of the banjo, guitar, stand-up bass, fiddle and mandolin.

All of these things never really mattered to me until I was tasked to figure out who’s who among America’s vast list of bluegrass bands for a client. My search ranged from North Carolina to Tennessee.

The Clairemont team’s job is to pinpoint an amazing main stage act that will draw the community out, and bring more word-of-mouth advertising for the client’s event.

During my search, I learned some agents don’t even want to talk with you if you aren’t mentioning big money. I didn’t take it personally, instead I opted to tell them there was no real budget and I was looking for the best in the business.

Although I have never experienced haggling with music agents, I think I did a pretty good job. I reminded myself that they are regular people just like me. Every agent I contact needs my business just as bad as I need their band.

After a series of dead end calls, and a few bounce-back emails, I finally had a breakthrough. I spoke with a few agents that were willing to work with us.

Throughout the day, it seems that my list has grown tremendously from five to 15 bands. All afternoon I have been receiving calls from national recording artist reps and I have to say, I feel special.

If you are ever in need of a bluegrass band as a main act at an event, make sure to stop by the Clairemont House and see me! I have added at least twenty bands and contacts to my repertoire.

Three Cheers/Barks for Pawgust First Friday!

Three Cheers/Barks for Pawgust First Friday!

Last week marked August First Friday in downtown Raleigh, and Clairemont celebrated the occasion by hosting our own special event at The Clairemont House – Pawgust First Friday. Part networking, part professional development, part tear-jerking and part tail-wagging, the event was a huge success, especially because we were able to raise money for a local pet charity very near and dear to the Clairemont family’s heart: the SPCA of Wake County.

At the event, local PR professionals and friends gathered to network and listen to two dog-inspired presentations given by Clairemont CEO, Dana Hughens, and HMA Public Relations general manager/vice president, Abbie Fink. Reading a blog post written by Clairemont’s top-dog, Billy, Dana shared 10 social media tips for success, like creating leash-free environments on Facebook, being the master of your territory and riding with your head out the window (make sure to check out the blog to see what all of these mean for your social media strategy!).

Visiting all the way from Phoenix, Ariz., Abbie did an encore performance of the highly rated ignite-style speech she presented at the 2013 PRSA Counselors Academy Conference. A love letter to her late dog, Viva, Abbie didn’t leave a dry eye in the house as she talked about the love of a dog and its owner and the hard decisions you sometimes have to make.

At the end of the evening, guests voted for a local pet charity to donate the Pawgust First Friday event proceeds to, and we are happy to say that the SPCA of Wake County was selected! You see, the oh so loveable chief motivational officer at Clairemont Communication and Hughens family dog, Billy, was adopted from the Wake SPCA so we were thrilled that our guests decided to help give back to such a great local organization.

All in all, the event was a blast, and we would like to thank everyone who came out and made it a success!

Last but certainly not least, meet the final member of the Counselors Academy conference planning committee, Laura Pesin!

Getting to know you…
Name: Laura Pesin

Agency: DeVries Global

Position: Executive Vice President

First job in PR: Associate at The Dilenschneider Group

Your insights…

Most loved thing about being in PR: Nailing a consumer insight related to my client/brands in such a cool, simple way that media and consumers alike “get it” and share it.

Best source for breaking PR news: PRWeek

Number one recommendation to new PR professionals: Be fearless, don’t be shy. And, don’t default to email, pick up the phone/get out of your office!!

About Counselors Academy…

Most valuable aspect of being a Counselors Academy member: Making connections to industry insiders that have a different way of looking at PR, dealing with challenges and approaching client service – and learning from them!

Role on the planning committee: Content Committee team member

Best thing about the Counselors Academy conference: Same as “most valuable aspect” question above.

Most fun memory of a Counselors Academy conference: Have only been once, but was sitting next to Elise Mitchell of Mitchell Communications at dinner in New Orleans last year and oversharing with eachother… 😉

PRSA’S COUNSELORS ACADEMY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Q&A WITH JON GOLDBERG

June 3, 2013January 31, 2023 Margot HorganBlog, Counselors Academy, Professional Development, Public RelationsCounselors Academy, Counselors Academy Conference, networking, PR, PR Agency, professional development, PRSA, PRSA's Counselors Academy, Public Relations, Public Relations Conferences

Getting to know you…
Name: Jon Goldberg

Agency: Reputation Architects

Position: Founder and Chief Reputation Architect

First job in PR: Campaign for the reform of onerous playground rules in the fifth grade. Then internal comms and PR for Prudential Insurance and 20+ years at J. Walter Thompson, Edelman and Porter Novelli.

Your insights…

Most loved thing about being in PR:  Talking executives off the ledge and showing them how to transform major crisis situations into opportunities to demonstrate responsible leadership.

Best source for breaking PR news: PR Week online alerts

Number one recommendation to new PR professionals: Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and ask for advice from people who are older and wiser. Find an excuse to go meet executives you admire, or are just interested in talking with. Make those connections early and they’ll remember you later on.

About Counselors Academy…

Most valuable aspect of being a Counselors Academy member: For me, it all comes down to something Eric Morgenstern said during my Counselors 101 session, which is that the odds of any of us competing against one another are slim, so we might as well work together and have all of us succeed. Annual membership in Counselors Academy: $195. Being able to access the brains of hundreds of people who share that mindset: Priceless.

Role on the planning committee: Marketing and PR, doing what Abbie says, and antagonizing Ken Jacobs.

Best thing about the Counselors Academy conference: The chance to meet and really get to know the most energetic, entrepreneurial, smart, and fun-as-all-hell people in the PR business. I arrived in Asheville a skeptic. I left with Las Vegas already on my calendar and a constellation of new friends and trusted colleagues.

Most fun memory of a Counselors Academy conference: Seeing the Eagles live at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, with around a dozen Counselors crammed into the tiny patch of turf Eric and Shanny Morgenstern staked out and guarded for us for the entire day. That’s what Counselors do for each other.
